Mallard Duck with babies

Concerns Northeastern Illinois Universityin Chicago. A lot of people have come into our library today very upset about a Mallard duck that nests in one of our enclosed court yards across from our bookstore. The reason people are so upset, is that the babies have been removed, (I’m told 11 of them) but the mother duck is still there, hysterically searching for her babies. Apparently the babies were walking balls of fluff right now. These upset staff members and students were told informally, by campus workers like grounds crew or janitors etc., that they have been relocated to the nature center which is just north of us. They were also told that the school hired someone to move them. Word also has it that someone will catch the mother again and show her the babies in the nature center. Most people don’t believe this because they keep seeing the mother, and because of past experience. How can we make certain the proper procedures are in place here?

Dennie, The young should not have been moved without the hen. It would be illegal to move the ducks unless: 1. a permit had been issued by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources or 2. if the ducks were trapped by a IDNR licensed Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator. Do you know who the school hired to move the ducklings?
