tagged deer

A doe was resting in the shallow ravine that is in my back yard -- she had one leg that seemed to have been injured but healed, as she had a limp but there was no obvious wound -- she had two ear tags (#185) -- who tags the deer and why and should I report the whereabouts of a tagged deer? I am fine with their being around, they have never posed any problem for me, just curious.

Were the ear tags yellow? The City of Highland Park funded a study of deer conducted by researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The study concluded in 2005, but involved live-capturing and marking numerous deer (yellow ear tags, radio collars on some does).
