I hear squeaking, scratching and fluttering at night in my attic (I live in a small apartment that IS the attic, so I guess I hear them right above me in the space between the roof and my ceiling). I really like bats and I know that if I tell my landlord, he'll kill them. I don't mind keeping them there but am wondering if there are any precautions I should take or things to watch out for in case it becomes dangerous to have them living right above my head? It's better not to have a bat(s) living that close to you. They can be carriers of rabies. Also, their waste would accumulate which over time would lead to unsanitary conditions. If you chose not to have the bat trapped and removed, make sure that there are no holes or cracks in the ceiling or walls. You don't want the bat to make its way into your living space. There are bat exclusion operators that could trap and release the bats. But the landlord would have to fix any holes on the outside of the building first so that the bats couldn't just come back in.
