I read in BirdWatcher’s (Vol. 35, No.4) that Downy Woodpeckers can become addicted to suet. It stated that they will eat enough to saturated their feathers with fat and make it difficult for the woodpecker to fly. I keep suet out year round and have several types of woodpeckers who eat it. Should I be concerned? I do change to a no-melt suet in the summer.
