What animals other than skunks spray as a defence. My dog was sprayed but it did not smell like the normal skunk.

Skunks are the only ones that spray. But members of the Mustelidae family all have glands that produce a strong musk used to mark territories and deter predators. In Illinois, we have long-tailed weasel, least weasel, American mink, American badger, and river otter. Is it possible your dog found a weasel?
