Fox around the house

I, too, have a young fox around our house. We have had a mom and her litter in the last year, but they seemed to move on. Now, we suspect we have one of the pups that moved into our neighborhood. We have children next door (no fences that would keep animals out), cats, and plenty of hiding places in the forrested area around our creek. He seem to be rather bold, laying around outside like a stray dog on the grass, not hidden at all. Due to the colder weather, we do not have the hoses out yet for the year. we have yelled at him and thrown rocks at him but he persists. We bring in the cat food early (coons around as well) but want to just have him move on into the country. Besides hiring someone and what you mentioned to the other person, any ideas?

The fox isn't likely to do any damage. But it would help keep the local rabbit, vole, and mice populations under control. It does sound as though this fox is pretty comfortable in the neighborhood. So it will be some work to persuade it to willingly move elsewhere. If you are able to go out with pots and pans (i.e., lots of loud noise) each time you see the fox, it will get the hint that it isn't welcome in your yard. But you'll probably want to give your neighbors the heads up about what you are doing.
