Ground Squirrel Control

We are having problems with Ground Squirrels as there are suddenly tons of holes throughout our property. We live in a rural setting so there are no City codes to follow regarding animal control. I'm wondering if there are any methods that are not allowed in the State of Illinois and what is the best method for controlling them? Thank you.

Are they thirteen-lined ground squirrels? http://web.extension.illinois.edu/wildlife/directory_show.cfm?species=groundsquirrel There are no repellents registered for use against ground squirrels in IL. But you don't need a permit to trap thirteen-lined ground squirrels. I have a bunch of them living at my farmstead. Other than the holes, which I don't mind, they don't cause problems. Letting the grass grow a little taller deters them.
