Hi, I just found a family of toads in my window well: a large male, a smaller female and 3 baby toads. I gently caught them and moved them under a hedge where its nice and moist. How on earth did a whole family end up in the window well? I almost feel bad that I moved them.

It isn't uncommon for toads or salamanders to get trapped in window wells. Removing them from the window well and placing them in an area that was moist and had cover from predators was exactly the right thing to do. Lucky for the toads that you spotted them.
