Squirrel with no tail and three legs

Why might a squirrel have no tail and be missing one hind leg? I do not believe it is due to a fight with another animal because the tail is missing right to the rump as opposed to just being a piece of what may be left after a figtht; the hind leg is missing in a similar, clean way. Is this likely a birth defect? What can I do to help him make it through the winter?

Probably a birth defect. Does the animal move around ok?
