eye infections in finches

I began seeing this condition last year but this year it is worse. Goldfinches and purple finches are the 2 I have observed with this... Their eyes are crusted over with loss of feathers around the eye. Some of them have eyes that are totally crusted over. It was suggested by a wildlife biologist that it could be some kind of avian influenza. Can you tell me what it is?

My guess is either conjunctivitis or avian pox. Cornell provides very good information about the conditions. You can find it here: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/hofi/hofifaqs.html
