Yes, possible. Black squirrels are just the melanistic variety of the grey squirrel. Here in Illinois we have grey, black, and white varieties of the grey squirrel.

I live in the country just a short distance from Ritchie, Illinois which is about 3 miles from Wilmington. So far for the past few weeks whenever I've traveled Rte 102 I've spotted 3-4 black squirrels along the roadside eating. This was very exciting for me because 11 years ago, I used to live on Arsenal Island which is part of Rock Island, Illinois. There I was blessed to see black squirrels all the time.
