One more question. When squirrels know they are dying, do they crawl into a small dark space, like under my stairs? Seems odd to me. Thanks

That sounds normal. If they are sick and weak, they know they are vulnerable to predators. A dark, quiet, protected space is a good place to go if they can't get back up into their nest in a tree.
