My father has recently moved to Caledonia and is concerned about his two dogs. As he is living on a farm now, he can not fence them in properly and is unsure of how far he can legaly go to protect them from foxes, raccoons and other small animals. Can he shoot an animal that is attacking his dogs if there is no other choice?

Unless they are small dogs, they should be fairly safe from most species of wildlife. Foxes, raccoons, and other wildlife are more likely to be attracted to dog food left outside than to the dogs themselves. In most cases where dogs tangle with wildlife (other than coyotes) it was usually the dog that started the conflict. Foxes and raccoons are protected by law. To remove them he would need an animal removal permit issued by an IDNR district wildlife biologist. These free permits are issued for wildlife that are causing damage or are a threat to safety.
