i have found 6 dead sparrows in my yard in the last 4 days. Most around the main feeding area where I keep the ground feeder and birdbath. Others found 20ft away by fence. They are all sparrows. They all have holes that looked like they have been pecked at. The eyes were still in tact. Iam very concerned as I have been feeding backyard birds for 20 years and have never seen this before. I also have 2 small chihuahuas that have the run of the yard. Let me assure you that they are not killing the birds, they are totally supervised in the yard.

Have you noticed any sick birds on your property? Birds are very good at hiding sickness, but some clues to look for are birds that do not move around much or fly very often (so that they can conserve their energy), sitting with their feathers ruffled, dull eyes, and fecal staining around the cloaca. Even well-kept bird feeders and bird baths can promote the spread of disease because birds are in closer contact with one another than they would be under normal feeding conditions. The holes could be from other birds pecking at the sparrows after they have died. Please feel free to e-mail me if you have more questions or if you have not noticed any sick birds.

I live in Ohio and I have a similar experience...2 sparrows found dead in the last few days - not far form the feeder and we also have a bird bath.
