I have noticed a massive group of what looks like ant hills in my back yard since the weather has warmed. Upon closer inspection the insects flying in and out are some kind of bee. It is about 1/2 inch in length, black abdomen and slightly yellow fuzzy thorax. Can you help me identify and possibly rid my yard of this insect?

I am not a bee expert, but I do know that we have several native species of bee in Illinois that build nests underground. They do not pose a threat to people and are very important pollinators. Native bees have suffered serious population declines around the state. If at all possible, they should be allowed to remain where they are. For more information about bees I would recommend that you contact Philip Nixon, Extension Specialist, PAT/Ornamental Household Insects, at Phone: 217-333-6650 pnixon@illinois.edu
