When deer are infected with lice or mites the irritation sometimes causes them to excessively groom themselves which can lead to hairloss. Demodectic mange is caused by a type of mite, and can lead to severe hair loss. The skin typically takes on a scabby, wrinkled appearance. If many deer are impacted, it would be worth a call to your local wildlife biologist.
